Amy Winehouse: The Current State of Celebrity

I started doing some research on which stories were garnering the most attention on Google News. I was actually surprised to see that the Norway Bombings were getting more attention than the death of Amy Winehouse. Below are the two screenshots of the results

Norway.Google.News.Results.07242011

Amy.Winehouse.Google.News.Results.07242011

As you can see Norway is getting more coverage than Amy Winehouse. This finding lead me to post on Twitter. This is what I posted:

“I’m glad to see that there are more News Stories regarding Norway than Amy Winehouse. Both are tragic, but Norway has more implications.” Grant Brunner and myself regarding which was actually had more implications. The following is a result of that exchange.

To start off, I do not watch a whole lot of television. I choose to spend my time either playing video games, listening to audiobooks, listening to podcasts or programming in Objective-C or HTML/CSS/PHP. I do watch some television, but it is almost entirely while I am eating dinner. The list of shows that I do watch are: House Hunters, House Hunters International, Next Design Star, Project Runway, House (sometimes), Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. Four of those are mostly because my Fiance wants to watch them. There is a pattern in which shows I watch, most of them can be categorized as ‘Reality TV’. Truthfully, they are all Reality TV (excluding House).

I have two categories for ‘Reality TV’. I have Informational Reality TV and True Reality TV. The Informational Reality TV shows would be House Hunters, House Hunters International, Next Design Star, and Project Runway. The True Reality TV shows would be Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. House is just entertainment. I generally do not like True Reality TV shows because they serve no purpose, most of the time, to Society at large. Where as Information Reality TV can be educational as well as entertaining.

True Reality TV is a complete waste of ‘Air time’. I feel as though all of these shows should be taken off the air. These types of shows would include, ‘Jersey Shore’, ‘Survivor’, ‘Fear Factor’, ‘The Simple Life’, ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here’, ‘Big Brother’, and ‘Real World’. These shows have no actual purpose other than perpetuating the idea of ‘Celebrity’.

Celebrities are idolized by a majority of the population. In the group I call ‘Celebrities’ includes Musicians (‘Rock Stars’), Actors and Actresses, Baseball Players, Basketball Players, and those who have household names but have not real reason for being considered famous. I do not include each individual within each of these over-arching groups, but the subset that brings down the ideal Model of each category.

For instance, in Baseball Roger Clemens is considered a ‘Celebrity’, while somebody like Frank Thomas or Nolan Ryan would not be considered so. Lance Armstrong would be considered a Celebrity for doping and bring down the ideal that the Cycling community is trying to portray. There are many actors and actresses that do not fit into the category of ‘Celebrity’, but there a ton who epitomize the term ‘Celebrity’.

There are those in society who are truly trying to do well and just get caught up in being a ‘Celebrity’ and begin to go down the wrong path. Ultimately, these people hit their low point and come out a better person on the other side and can become a spokesperson for their industry. The primary example I am thinking of is Rob Lowe. If you have not read his book ‘Stories I Only Tell my Friends’, go and buy the Hardcover, Kindle Edition, Audible Version or Nook Version and read it.

The problem with ‘Celebrity’, and the idolization of, is that members of Society truly believe that they can become a Celebrity. They do not just want to be famous but they want to the spotlight to always be on them and never stray away. They want to have everybody talking about them. They do not care if it is positive things that are being said or negative, to them they cannot differentiate between the two. The issue with this view is that the news tends to only report the negative things regarding a specific celebrity. And because of this type of reporting, some rather impressionable individuals believe that this is the path towards becoming a famous person.

Many of the negative reports are when ‘Celebrities’ are arrested for possession of marijuana, cocaine, extacy, prescriptions drugs or some other substance. These impressionable people take this to be ‘acceptable behavior’ and mimic this type of behavior in hopes to become a household name. This is the root issue.

Amy Winehouse died yesterday, July 23rd, 2011. She died at the age of 27. She joins a group of individuals known as the ’27Club’. These are musical talents who have died at the age of 27. These include Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain and Janis Joplin. She will now always be remembered as somebody who had difficulties with drugs and alcohol and will forever be a ‘Celebrity’. As of this writing, there is no official cause of death; however, many speculate that drugs and alcohol may be the cause.

During our brief exchange Grant pointed out that Addiction and Depression affect more people than terrorism. This is true, and addiction and Celebrity are not mutually exclusive, but they are not mutually required either. The issue of addiction is considered ‘taboo’ by many people. Many people refuse to see that they have a problem despite everyone around them knowing this to be a fact. There are some very simple ways to combat and fix this taboo.

The first fix starts with Hollywood. Hollywood needs to reign in their Actors and Actresses. Hollywood should begin shunning, and not providing work, to Actors and Actresses who do not exemplify the behaviors that are conducive of a representative of the Film Industry. Is it really hard for the Screen Actors Guild to say ‘No, we are not going to allow you to be part of our membership because you are an addict.’? SAG should start requiring drug testing of all of their Actors and Actresses. If they test positive, they are not allowed to act until they can prove that they are sober and have been sober for a significant amount of time. If this were to occur, the amount of drug and alcohol abuse in Hollywood would go down significantly. This would have to go beyond SAG, but also include the Agents, Directors, Producers, and Studios. They would be required to put it in contracts that if an Actor or Actress fails a drug test, they do not get paid for that role. The same should go for every Hollywood employee from the lowliest Grip to the most famous director. Nobody should be excluded.

The Recording Industry is not exempt from this either. Every musician should be required to pass a drug test before being allowed to record a track and should be randomly tested throughout the entire recording process. When a musician goes on tour they should also be required to pass drug screenings along the tour. There should be severe consequences for not passing a drug test. It may be that the musician does not get paid for the entire tour, or a significant cut in pay.

Sports should be the exact same way. Players should be cut from teams, not allowed to play, and not be eligible for free-agent status until they are sober. These funds from the wage cuts, and withholdings in pay from offenders could go towards helping others in their industry become sober and a valuable member of the community.

All of these methods would allow for a better representation of their respective industries and might sway some impressionable individuals from believing that by doing bad behavior they can become a ‘Celebrity’. It may not come easily, and it may just be a pipe dream, but if these are not implemented it could become a significant slippery slope for future individuals who wish to become ‘Celebrities’. It may come to a point where those who need to be helped cannot be helped due to Society believing that it is acceptable to be an addict and not forcing individuals to get the help that they desperately need.

Twitter: Why does it keep failing?

One of the things that Twitter has been most famous for is their “Fail Whale”. The Fail Whale appeared quite often during the early years of Twitter. You could just be browsing the site, reload to see your new tweets and receive the Fail Whale. Sometimes, refreshing the page would allow the Fail Whale to disappear, but this was not always the case.

Twitter Fail Whale

One of the biggest problems that I cannot fathom is how does a service that only does ONE THING be having issues that affect all users. The latest issue by twitter occurred this evening and is described below. This is the exact text by the Twitter Status blog.

Tweet delivery delay 1 hour ago
We are experiencing delays in tweet delivery. We are aware of the issue and taking action.

Update (Tue Jun 21 00:00:42 UTC 2011): Estimated time to recovery 20 minutes

Update (Tue Jun 21 00:09:12 UTC 2011): Recovery complete

How can there be a delay in delivering your only product? I mean, seriously. Twitter only does one thing, showing people Twitter posts, commonly called Tweets. You have one function, how the hell can you break your one product so that you cannot actually use your sole product. It’s a big turn-off for users to have the one function be unusable. Pull it together Twitter, pull it together.

PROTECT IP Act, and acting upon it

So, I was reading my Google reader stories and came across an article from Techdirt.com that showed 18 senators that support the PROTECT IP Bill. Since my senator, Dick Durbin, was on this list, I decided to write my Congress Critter to let him know that I am not happy with him supporting this bill. Below is the exact text I sent him.

Mr. Durbin:

Your support for the PROTECT IP act is appalling. The thought that an Act like PROTECT IP is being considered to protect a business who believes that suing its constituents is a valid business model is just plain wrong. This is not a business model; this is a means to extort money from the people who help make money for their business.

Moreover, I guess I do not understand how movie studios can somehow spend $300 Million on a movie, make $500 million in two weekends and still lose money. The math and logic used by the movie studios is severely flawed and they should be heavily scrutinized for deceptive and possible illegal business practices.

The most egregious portion of this bill is that Senators are supporting it without fully understanding how technology works. DNS, or Domain Name System, is like a phonebook for the Internet. With a phone book you know the a person’s name but not necessarily the phone number of where to reach them. So you look it up. This is the exact same thing process that occurs when with DNS. You know the name of a website, like senate.gov, but you don’t know the IP Address, which is the actual way to contact the website, So you tell your web-browser to look up the IP Address, or phone number, of the website. Which for senate.gov is 156.33.195.33. Equate a website to a person, and the IP address to that person’s phone number.

As far as I am ware you cannot legally remove a person’s name from the phone book just because you do not like who they support or what their views on the Chicago teams may happen to be. Supporting this bill is the equivalent to removing a person from the phone book. Nobody should be allowed to remove a website just because you don’t like what is being said, or hosted, on that site. It should be illegal to remove a site without legal cause and a jury trial.

The PROTECT IP bill allows for the removal of a website based upon “enabling or facilitating the reproduction, distribution, or performance of copyright works, in complete or substantially complete form, in a manner that constitutes copyright infringement under section 501 of title 17, or offering goods or services in violation of section 1201 of title 17; or
enabling or facilitating sale, distribution, or promotion of goods, services or materials bearing a counterfeit market, as that term is defined in section 34(d) of the Lanham Act;”

If this bill is enacted websites like YouTube, Vimeo, bittorent.com, and others would have never been created. The enactment of this bill will stifle innovation because nobody will be confident enough to create a website for fear of being considered a host of illegal content. This would also mean sites like MySpace and Facebook may never have existed either. Enactment of this bill could lead to other egregious laws that could ultimately make posting anything on the Internet illegal. If users are afraid to use an item any business that relies on that item will ultimately fail. If the Internet were to stop being used then I believe that the United States, including Illinois, would enter into a depression worse than in the 1930′s and may ultimately revert back society to the 1800s.

The PROTECT IP bill may be intended to remove piracy which is understandable. However, where does the restriction stop? The PROTECT IP legislation allows the government to tell a search engine that they are not allowed to link to a website. This may initially be due to piracy, but with a law like this on the books the government could decide that they do not like anybody talking about Wikileaks. So nobody can link to the Wikileaks website. Next the government may decide that they do not like anybody talking about Pakistan, so nobody can link to anything regarding Pakistan. WHen does it stop? This could become a very slippery slope towards a dictatorial society.

The Internet is the symbol of Free Speech which is constitutionally protected by the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. As you are most likely aware the Amendment states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” (taken from archives.gov).

The Internet allows those who are against a specific religion can voice their opposition without fear of persecution, without fear of retaliation and without fear of imprisonment. The PROTECT IP bill would allow the government to be able to control what is said, what is hosted and what is expressed on the Internet in CLEAR violation of the First Amendment.

The Twelfth amendment comes into play with this as well. Particularly this section “…nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law…”. The PROTECT IP act allows the government to decide what is viewable on the Internet. Explain to me how this does not constitute deprivation of property without due process. I believe as though this bill would violate the Twelfth amendment not to mention the blatant violation of the First Amendment.

Your support of this bill may ultimately be the reason for which I will not vote for your re-election. Many citizens believe as though Congress is being paid for by the Movie Studios and the support of this bill does not deter from that perception.

As a voter of Illinois I am extremely disappointed in your support for the PROTECT IP bill. I thought congress was supposed to look out for the constituents and put their best interest first and foremost, I guess the system has failed in this respect by putting the best interest of Corporations ahead of users.

Reluctant Beta Testers of Twitter for Mac

Some of our contributors develop software for a living and can attest to the fact that software does not always work 100% of the time as expected. Typically when one does a software upgrade it does not break BASIC functionality of an application; at least any good quality controlled application would not break simple functionality that one would think would be easily implemented and would not have been affected by an upgrade. Well, this is not the case with Twitter for Mac version 2.1.

Twitter for Mac used to be called Tweetie before @atebits was gobbled up by Twitter. Many people speculated that Tweetie would go by the wayside, well that was partially the case. Twitter for Mac was born out of Tweetie.

Now I cannot complain about the issues that software can cause, but Twitter has broken a basic function of their application. Obviously if you decide to use a URL in a tweet using Twitter for Mac 2.1 you will not get an accurate character count. Can somebody please tell me how the fuck you mess up a character count. The entire premise of your web-based service is to limit messages to 140 characters. Now with this being a basic premise it would seem IMPERATIVE to have an accurate character count. Take a look at the screenshot below.

Explain to me how by adding one letter I automatically have 11 characters subtracted from the character count. This seems a bit odd to me. The next picture is even better. The count is completely off.

As you can see Twitter for Mac assumes I have 13 additional characters than I actually have. For some reason this appears to be poor quality control. Out of complete curiosity, does Twitter even use their own products or does everybody use the web-based client or other third-party products to post to Twitter. I’d like to know. Twitter needs to fix their quality control pretty damn quick. This is abso-fucking-lutely a disaster to allow the basic functionality of your application be broken by an update. This should have immediately been caught by Twitter. And on top of that Apple should have pointed it out as well. I guess as long as Twitter doesn’t violate Apple’s “no-private API usage” clause of the agreement then it’s all good. Even if it is a broken application.

Trend Micro: The insidious piece of shit

Working in IT makes it quite interesting to see exactly how applications morph through upgrades and patches. You expect text editors to add new options like spellcheck. You expect games to be expanded with new add-ons. Antivirus programs are no exception to new additions.

When Antivirus applications began cropping up, they had a single purpose, Antivirus. By Antivirus, I mean scan for viruses that may be infected, or may potentially infect your computer.

Over the years Antivirus companies have added new features to their Antivirus products to become ‘Internet Protection Suites’. The new additions include, Firewalls, Email scanners, filtering, Instant Messaging filtering, and even ‘computer tune-up’ services. Sure, these are definitely vectors for potential security threats, but is it really necessary to add these to an application?

I have worked in the same IT department for over seven years and in that time we have managed to change out several of our products for comparable products. We replaced our Cisco Switches with Juniper Switches, We have switched our firewalls from Checkpoint to Juniper SSGs. We upgraded our backup from Veritas Backup through all of the permutations of Symantec Backup Exec. And, we changed out our Antivirus from Symantec Corporate to Trend Micro’s Worry-free business.

During my stint with this IT department, we have created a very short list of companies we will avoid at all costs. The list contains only two companies. Cisco and Symantec. Why these two, simple. Cisco over charges for their products and their maintenance. For what we paid for one year of Cisco SmartNet, we were able to buy new switches and get a year of support. Symantec is on this list for a couple of reasons. The first is that their licensing practices are horrendous. There has note been a year that we have not had to call Symantec and activate our licenses, among other logistical issues related to licensing. The second reason for not dealing with Symantec is because Symantec Antivirus corporate edition 9.0 would not always properly update. If it did not properly apply a patch you would be forced to go through the register and remove anything related to Symantec in order to be able to properly re-install Antivirus, not just that, version 10 added a firewall and everything else and that made it even more of a pain in the ass to remove.

We have added a new company to this list. Trend Micro. Why Trend Micro, quite simple. They have Symantecized their Corporate antivirus product to the point where it is now considered bloatware. Trend Micro’s “Worry-free” business is exhibiting the exact same behavior as the Symantec corporate Antivirus products did. You have to do a ‘registry purge’ of anything related to Trend in order for it to actually be able to re-install the product. And even that may not allow you to re-install the product.

I have spent the last two days having to undo the trash-jobs that Trend Micro’s products have managed to cause with the latest ‘Patch’. On one particular PC I have attempted to re-install the product no less than six times. One fucking PC. This is where I draw the line. I have declared War on Trend Micro and I am willing to use another product. This is not the first time we have had an issue with Trend screwing up like this. The first time was back in December when we installed the last patch for the product.

We have begun implementing Microsoft’s Forefront on some PCs so that we can get back to using a product that does not require 2GB of RAM in order to allow the computer to properly run. And do not even try running Trend Micro on anything that is more than 2 years old, it runs horribly. The final straw with Trend Micro is that the updates on the server end take upwards of 30 minutes to actually download and install and that is just the VIRUS DEFINITIONS. \

Can somebody please explain how virus definition updates are 48MB and take 30 minutes to download on a 12 Mbps connection? It baffles my mind that a company is still peddling shitty software to this day. I expect some bugs, but this is going to force us to take a hard look at not installing patches due to the two past horrendous experiences with ‘upgrading’.

Trend is losing a customer, it’s that simple. Once we migrate over to Microsoft’s forefront we will not be looking back at the significant number of hours wasted fixing a shitty product.

The horrible incident with Clear #1

I was about to head to the store today and decided to check my bank statement. I noticed a charge for Clear Internet service. I have not used the service since September 2010 when I suspended it due to not being able to get any coverage while in my house. The email I received when I cancelled states

Your iSpot Service automatically be canceled 60 days after the effective suspension date of your iSpot Service, if you do not elect to reactivate your iSpot Service before then.

As this states, including the non-sequitur where the world ‘will’ should be inserted after ‘service’, my service should have been cancelled in November of 2010. According to the Billing representative I talked to he said that suspensions only last “180 days”. Six months would bring me to March, when they billed me again.

Wait, your email stated my account would automatically be cancelled after sixty days. Well I guess this did not actually occur now did it.

How is it that a company can arbitrarily charge customers for service they are no longer using and which should have been cancelled already. Automatically re-activating a user’s account without ANY notification is a horrible way to operate.

And do you want to know what just puts salt in the wound, more than 10 minutes on hold for their account department. After talking to the account lady and explaining that I had this email she asked me to FAX, FUCKING FAX, the printed email to their Retention department.

Are you fucking kidding me? You’re a damned INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER. Keyword, INTERNET. What is associated with Internet. E-mail. How is it that you do even have a damned e-mail box for your retention department. I promptly told the lady I need to speak to somebody, I don’t give a shit (didn’t actually say that) if it is the CEO’s secretary. I want this resolved, I refuse to FAX in a document. This is fucking 2011, not 1991. This is absolutely ridiculous. Furthermore, according to the account lady the only way to CANCEL their service is to call them up. You’re an internet service provider can’t supply email to your own departments; how fucked up is this company.

So your email basically LIED to customers. Explain to me how they have not been investigated by the FTC for falsification of information and how their FCC licenses have not been pulled. This is just getting better.

It took nearly an hour to finally get an email address to send it to. I am sure the lady had to call a few people to get that account setup, because none of the big-wigs wanted to talk to me regarding a piddly $50 dispute, but still, it’s all about the principle of the matter. The cherry on the top was that the email address they gave me has failed. I will try sending it again later, but this is not a good sign. (Update: 3 tries later, still come back as failure [04/08/2011 14:00]).

I am wondering if Clear should be investigated for improper business practices. Their business practices are shadier than Slim Shady. The thing that bothers me the most is that I know they were stalling just to try and calm me down. Which does not always work.

Why do guys think abuse is ok?

I was watching Teen Mom 2′s Reunion Special tonight and during this show they recap the entire season. There is one woman on the show, Kailyn, who was being verbally abused by her ex and baby’s father. CAn somebody explain to me why Men think it’s ok to be verbally, or physically, abusive towards women? I just don’t get it. Also, why do some women keep going back to those who are a severely negative influence on them.

How is it that MTV’s filming crew did not step in and at least say something. Who feels that calling a woman a ‘whore’ because you’re upset with her is anything that should be done, EVER. I mean seriously, Kailyn’s ex, Jo, should be confronted regarding his behavior.

The second person, Chelsea, needs to see that her relationship with Adam will never work. They constantly fight. He calls her stupid, a bitch, and has cheated. EXplain to me how he is somebody that you would want to be with. And it’s not like it happened when they were broken up, because then it would not be cheating. This happened while she was pregnant. This doesn’t make sense.

The last person, Janelle, may have finally figured out that her ex, Kiefer, is not who she needs to be with. Yes, Janelle has her issues, but Kiefer seems to always bring out the worst. Because of Kiefer, Janelle ended up getting arrested. Dr. Drew is a badass. He basically told Janelle that she could tell Kiefer to ‘Fuck off’ and that he is a loser. Kiefer needs to get his ass into rehab and see what type of negative influence he is having on those around him, and more particularly, how the type of people he hangs around with bring him down.

I do not know why I watch these shows, nor why more women do not step up and say, ‘No, enough is enough.’ It does not make sense to me. But then again, if things made sense to me, it would make sense to everybody and we would have had this little discussion.

Post Office Rant #1

I like ordering items off of the Internet, and that means that they have to be sent to my house. Living in an area where the mail carriers cannot manage to get out of their cars to deliver the mail, we have a multi-unit mailbox. So I opened up the mailbox and I noticed this:

Can somebody explain to me how the hell to get this out without destroying the box?

I did manage to retrieve it, but obviously the mail carrier did not think about this fact when they put the delivery into the mailbox. Why can’t they just look and go, “hmm… they won’t be able to remove this, I guess I’ll deliver it to the door”. Obviously this is not the case.

Website Design Rant #1: Textboxes and Colors

One of the things that I spend my time doing is designing websites. I try and get inspiration from other sites and follow some of the techniques of the most popular sites, whether that inspiration be with menu design, layout, or even color choices. Despite getting inspiration there is also a significant number of poor choices when it comes to web design. These example are even easier to learn from, because it’s things to avoid. Below is a prime example of something to avoid.

I have blocked out the name of the company, just to be nice. What is wrong with this picture? First and foremost it’s grey text boxes with white text. How the hell is anybody supposed to be able to read that? I don’t care if it is part of your overall color scheme, a light text should never be on a light background. The text should be black so somebody can actually read the screen.

If you are designing a website, you should make sure that people can actually read what they are typing, nobody is perfect on a keyboard and most users are not going to type out their comments in another editor then copy and paste. So it appears that this company is trying not to solicit feedback from it’s customers because it is not making it easy enough for users to be able to see what they are typing.

In addition to not being able to easily see what is being typed, the entire site does not work on a mobile device. You cannot move up and down the drop-down lists as demonstrated below.

On iOS devices the drop-down should automatically change to a picker that allows you to scroll through the list of options. This is not the case with this company. If you are designing a website, mobile should be included as part of the strategy. If you are going to go through a re-design, mobile should be taken into considering from the beginning, not be an afterthought. That’s another rant for another day.
